With its area-specific approach, the Province of South Holland focuses on a number of sub-areas in the ZH-PLG, one of which is the IJsselmonde Island. IJsselmonde is a particularly complex area where, in addition to major issues such as water, climate, nature and nitrogen, urban pressure also plays a major role. Unravelling that complexity and translating it into real projects is what drives us!

Rura Transition – The province of South Holland is investing in an area-specific approach to the South Holland Rural Area Programme (ZH-PLG). The aim is to tackle various challenges in rural areas, such as nature conservation, water quality, nitrogen and climate change. In the South Holland Delta, each island is looking at how landowners and users of the area can deal with the ZHPLG goals on water, climate, nature and nitrogen. The Island of IJsselmonde is one of these.

About IJsselmonde

IJsselmonde is an island in the Meuse Delta, located in the province of South Holland. The island is surrounded by the Nieuwe Maas on the north side, the Oude Maas on the south and west sides, and the Noord on the east side. IJsselmonde is characterised by high urbanisation, with large residential areas, extensive infrastructure (such as motorways, tunnels, bridges and railways) and commercial activity.

Our approach

In IJsselmonde, we are linking up with existing processes and networks. To this end, we are adopting an area-specific approach by revising the IJsselmonde area vision “IJsselmonde Island Landscape Park”, which focuses on the qualities of the rural area. We work from the Landscape Table, an administrative collaboration between the six municipalities on IJsselmonde (Albrandswaard, Barendrecht, Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, Ridderkerk, Rotterdam and Zwijndrecht), the province of South Holland, the Hollandse Delta Water Board, Zuid-Hollands Landschap, Staatsbosbeheer and the Buijtenland van Rhoon Area Cooperative. The aim of the Landscape Table is to stimulate the recreational appeal, accessibility and usability of the green landscape, thereby strengthening the economic business climate. We incorporate the objectives of the ZH-PLG into the recalibration of the vision and process of the Landscape Table.

&flux and rural transition

We are keen to work on the theme of “Transition in rural areas” because it ties in with our vision of sustainability and future-proofing. The area-based approach in IJsselmonde is an important approach for a resilient and sustainable future. Although it is a complex task with the necessary uncertainties, we believe that it is precisely in that uncertainty and complexity that the solution often lies.

By working together on a conceivable future, we tackle challenges that often seem impossible for individual organisations. This approach not only promotes growth and development, but also enables us to anticipate future changes and challenges. The project offers an opportunity to work together to find a new future in which we create more value while reducing our impact on the environment.

Curious about what else we are doing in the South Holland Delta? We are also working on the theme of rural transition in other areas. For example, in Voorne Putten, the Island of Dordrecht and IJsselmonde, where we also facilitate process guidance for the NPLG.
