Rural regions are going to change. This sector is facing challenges in terms of biodiversity, water and climate change. In addition, agriculture and the quality of life also impose critical threats. It is thus vital to collaborate and create a collective strategy, together with farmers, residents, and nature organisations. &flux is committed to successfully realise the rural transition.

the challenge

Realising resilient rural regions

The rural transition affects people, businesses and nature in the region. Decisions on difficult choices are inevitable due to limited space. This leads to growing tensions and uncertainties in the area. This results in the elimination of processes aimed to support the rural transition. However, it is vital to know howwe can still achieve a joint future perspective?

&flux is expert in guiding complex processes in order to take steps forward. We specialise in forming successful partnerships when there are divergent interests, especially when things are difficult and tensions rise. Through regional processes we work on the Dutch National Programme for Rural Areas (NPLG), but we also move beyond the program by facilitating sustainable agriculture and recreation initiatives. It is importantto not lose sight of the human dimension. Together we will realise a future-proof rural environment.

our approach

From strategy to execution

By creating connections between stakeholders in rural regions, we guide them in sharing visions and translating these into successful collaborations and initiatives. If we genuinely listen to each other and learn from each other, future-proof agriculture, nature, landscape and recreation can truly strengthen each other. Our transition management covers three levels: strategic, tactical, and operational.

Strategic

How do you translate vision to strategy? We support and guide the process of decision-making by setting concrete goals.

What is future-proof agriculture and how will it benefit both the entrepreneur and environment? How do we integrate issues around nature, pesticides, water quantity and water quality into multi-layer solutions? How do we build future-proof collaborations between all stakeholders? &flux continuously switches between scope, governance and implementation to get the best out of people and processes.

Tactical

To achieve your goal, you need to know which steps to take. A clear roadmap, for example, offers perspective.

If there is limited space, smart designs of functions lead to better solutions. For example, by enhancing the storage capacity of a nature-friendly embankments, the area can retain more water but also collect more water when needed. &flux initiates and guides the conversation between partners, to achieve the highest achievable result.

Operational

&flux is involved in implementing programmes on the ground to realise genuine impact.

How much water storage do we need? And how which size is necessary for green-blue networks in order to be effective to enable biodiversity? Who is responsible for management? Through joint fact finding and learning processes, &flux guides partners in making innitiatives concrete and feasible.

Our Impact

Rural transition on Voorrne-Putten

Voorne-Putten is a beautiful island on which agriculture, nature and the villages have shaped the identity of the landscape. The area is loved by tourists all over the country. But the island currently faces threats by climate change, salinization, new environmental challenges, droughts, etcetera.

Within the framework of the Dutch National Programme for Rural Areas, we guide the process on   Voorne-Putten. Together with landowners, governments and other stakeholders, we are searching for the identity of the island in order to realise a joint future perspective. We are confident that Voorne-Putten will remain a healthy, safe and vital area in the future, due to the adaptive capacity of the island and its residents. We continue to seek connections between partners regarding the vision and challenges on the island throughout all political, administrative, and substantive uncertainty. With that foundation, we aim to shape tasks, collaboration and projects together.
