Accelerating the energy transition in Alphen aan den Rijn
The municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn has set itself the goal of becoming climate neutral by 2050. This means that the municipality will switch from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources. The Energy Transition Programme offers a structured approach to accelerate this transition, with a focus on sustainable energy generation, energy conservation, and social engagement.
Why?
The energy transition poses major challenges, such as energy poverty, grid congestion and the need for sustainable heating solutions. The municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn has engaged &flux to support the development of a strategic and programmatic approach. This includes stimulating local energy generation, supporting residents and businesses in energy saving, and promoting cooperation with regional and national partners.
Our approach
Our approach within the Energy Transition programme results in four performance lines:
- Insulate and save
Encourage energy saving among residents and businesses, with a special focus on vulnerable groups.
2. Sustainable heating
Developing feasible and affordable alternatives to natural gas.

3. Power generation and energy system
Encouraging local ownership and sustainable energy generation, and finding solutions for grid congestion.
4. Making business parks more sustainable
Working with entrepreneurs to develop collective energy solutions and promote energy hubs.
In addition, specific attention is paid to participation and communication in order to actively involve all stakeholders in the energy transition.
Results
The Energy Transition Programme that we developed in collaboration with the municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn is the result of this project. Ownership has been created and the municipality is ready to lead and organise this programme towards a sustainable built environment. The first steps have already been taken. Through a combination of technical, financial and social measures, more and more residents and businesses are becoming actively involved in making their energy use more sustainable.
Next steps
In the coming years, Alphen aan den Rijn will continue to work on the implementation of the Energy Transition Programme. Within the Sustainable Heating performance line, the municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn has asked &flux to join the organisation and provide support in initiating the heat transition.
